Fresno High Holiday Recipes

by Conor Hustedde

Holidays are a time of family cheer and delicious foods. As a way to spread the cheer, we’ve collected recipes from the warrior family that are cooked during the holidays for you to share with your loved ones.

Berry Cobbler

Josefine Vander Pool

The berry cobbler is a dessert I make a lot during the holidays. It’s a family favorite and it usually gets eaten very quickly. This dish is important to me because it’s a family recipe I got from my mom, and she would make it every holiday until I was 13 and then I was in charge of making it.

Ingredients:

  • 3 quarts of berries (raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries)

  • 2 cups of sugar

  • 2 cups of flower

  • 2 teaspoons of salt

  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 stick of butter

    Instructions:

  • Place the berries in a pan.

  • Mix the dry ingredients and the eggs together

  • Spread the mixture on top of the berries

  • Melt the stick of butter and drizzle it on top

  • Put it in the oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes

Champurrado

Stephanie Tzinzun Garcia

Champurrado is like a Mexican hot chocolate and is important to me because I grew up drinking it and it is a family recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups of water

  • 1 piloncillo cone (brown sugar) 1/2 cup

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • Two tablets of Mexican chocolate

  • 3/4 cups of masa (corn flour)

Instructions:

  • In a saucepan, boil the 8 cups of water with the two cinnamon sticks.

  • After it comes to a boil, remove the sticks and turn to a low heat.

  • Slowly add the masa to the water till no clumps show.

  • Add the chocolate and piloncillo, and add milk to taste.

Shortbread Toffee Bars

Sydney Maroot

Every year for as long as I can remember, my mom has made goodie bags for family and friends and we have delivered them on Christmas eve. As I have grown up, I have started to help with the baking and deliveries a little more each year. This is my personal favorite treat out of the 10-15 that we make every year. These goodie bags and the process of making them have brought me closer to my mom and I look forward to the day I am an adult teaching this recipe to my own kids as well as adding in my own recipes and can personally deliver treats to give to her!

Ingredients:

  • Shortbread Crust

  • ¾ cup butter, room temperature

  • ¾ cup light brown sugar

  • 1½ cups flour

Filling

  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk

  • 2 Tbsp butter

Topping

  • 1 bag chocolate chips

  • 1 bag toffee bits

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350°

  • Line a 9x13 pan with parchment

Shortbread Crust

  • Beat butter and sugar together until combined, 1-2 minutes.

  • Mix in flour. Mixture will be slightly dry. Press into prepared pan. Bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly.

Filling

  • In a small saucepan heat sweetened condensed milk and butter together until butter is smooth. Pour over shortbread crust. Bake 12-15 minutes until filling is bubbly and browned. It will almost take on a light caramel appearance. Remove from oven

Topping

  • Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips on top of filling when it comes out of the oven. Place back in oven for 2 minutes until chips are shiny and soft.

  • Carefully spread the chips over the filling with an off-set spatula.

  • Sprinkle with toffee bits, pressing into chocolate.

  • Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares.
