Leadership

by Jeremiah Gomez- Sports Editor

Every high school has a leadership group who organizes activities and events for the students to participate and to get involved with their high school community. The Fresno High Leadership is run by Mrs. Melissa Bangerter aka Mama B. There are Leadership classes during 4th and 5th periods, and some students go during 6th period as well. Everything the Leadership group produces all begins in room IA6 where that’s where they meet and do most of their work.

The Fresno High Leadership strives to set a good example and showing what it means to have Warrior Pride. Some activities and events leadership put together are the school rallies, sport events, dress up weeks and many other of the events that happen at Fresno High. Students in leadership have a fun time organizing the friends Fresno High brings to the students. Senior Paige De La Cruz has fun “making arts and crafts” and “making new friends” while in Leadership. Enrique Perez, also a senior, said Leadership is fun because “the people you meet, what I can help out”

This year’s Leadership group works every day to bring Fresno High its events. There’s a lot more in store that they have to offer this school year for the students at Fresno High to get involved in.

Playland to Remain Open

by Kiana Jones

Ever since the opening of Playland in 1955, it has been memorable and indispensable in children’s lives. Playland is the amusement park of Fresno, California, sharing the space of Roeding Park with the Fresno Chafee Zoo and Storyland. The amusement park entails rides, like a roller coaster and ferris wheel, mini golf, a food court, small gift shop, and a few arcade games spread throughout it. The majority of Playland’s entertainment has been donated to them.

They are not a part of the Measure Z movement, which means they aren’t being helped financially. Their high prices and continuously being closed takes away from the admittance. Playland has been in danger of closing for decades. Playland was said to be permanently closed the weekend of January. This turned out to be a marketing gimmick as was the previous claim of closing. As of now Playland is continuing to be open through the end of June. Since January 18, the park expanded its hours. From Thursday to Friday 12pm to 8pm and from Saturday to Sunday 10am to 8pm. Playland is also setting deals where every Thursday admissions are half off in the hope of increasing the number of guests.

Playland is nostalgic to parents and joyous to children. For this reason, several people in the community are donating, fighting for, and supporting Playland to keep its doors open.

Chicano Youth Conference

by Betzabel Macedo- Features Editor

The Chicano Youth Conference, which was held at Fresno State on January 27, 2024, is a conference that hosts many workshops that are related to cultural awareness, social justice, access to higher education, and career and leadership.

The event opened with a performance by Fresno State’s Aztec Dance group. Many students attended and listened to keynote speaker, Dr. Yammilette Rodriguez. Dr. Rodriguez is a Fresno State alumnus with a bachelor's in business administration, marketing, and a master's degree in leadership and organizational studies.

Dr. Rodriguez talked about how Chicano students should be more involved. She brought up how a group of students fought to limit the amount of liquor stores as this led to more gun violence, and another recent group of students fought to have a Latinx graduation for the parents to be able to understand what is going on at the graduation ceremonies.

Then students were sent to their workshops, and after two workshops, they were given burritos and could visit a couple of resource booths. After visiting the resource booths, students were sent back to where the first part of the conference was held and saw a performance by Los Danzantes de Aztlan. Students were then entered into a raffle and were able to win some Fresno State merch.

With the help of the sponsors, Mu Chi Omega Fraternity Incorporated, Fresno State Latino/a Faculty and Staff Association, Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, The Amendola Family Students Cupboard Cross Culture and Gender Center, and Kraft Heinz Company the conference this conference has happened for the last 51 years.
