Earth Day

by Joshua Butz

Earth Day was invented by Senator Gaylord Nelson in spring of 1970. 20 million people (about the population of New York) across the United States demonstrated their respect for the Earth by picking up trash or planting trees. Earth Day is mainly about reminding people that we live on this planet, and if we don't take care of it, it won't sustain life much longer. In the 1970s, the Sierra Club helps organize the first Earth Day.  In the 80s, Earth Day was made to spread self-awareness so we can have air to breathe and water to drink. It was also made to show people what they could do and what they should do to help the quality of the earth.

Fresno celebrates Earth Day by bringing communities together to help beautify Fresno, and they mainly help to beautify Fresno by cleaning up streets or planting trees.

Official Earth Day is April 22, but Fresno High celebrated it on April 20. Students and staff headed to the Tower District and picked up trash. “Everyone should act like every day was Earth Day,” suggested Beautify Fresno advisor Ms. Jamie Anthony.
