The 5star App

by Elizabeth Hernandez

This school year Fresno High has abandoned Minga and moved on to the 5star app.

What is the 5star app? The 5star app is a new school app that Fresno High has decided to use for the 2023-2024 school year. The 5star app helps the school with student’s attendance, tardies and much more. Fresno High School encourages students to download the app since it is an easier and faster way with a simple scan. 5star is an app made to inform students of major events/ school activities, and help students get more involved. The 5star app claims to “increase student, staff and community engagement with their unique, easy to use system.”

With the 5star app you can view your own points, rewards, activities, events, and access available surveys and voting polls. Plus, receive school news and notifications. You can also Use your virtual ID to check into events or even check in yourself, based on location or code, if available from your school.

A virtual ID is available, which includes a photo, scannable barcode, and associated badges. For seniors, the school makes you download the app to be able to go off campus. During lunch, staff and security scan your barcode on your photo ID in the app to check if you are a senior and if you are eligible. The school makes you download the app to go off campus. If you do not have it downloaded, you will not be able to go off campus whatsoever. The app also claims to track you and many people have mixed opinions about it. Senior, Alessandra Bustos said, “I think the only purpose of the app is to be able to go off campus, I think it is a little weird how the app tracks me, but I understand why because of safety reasons”.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

by Elizabeth Hernandez

October is not only Spooky month but Breast Cancer Awareness month!

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and throughout the year—people wear pink ribbons to honor survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and to support the progress we are making together to defeat breast cancer.

What causes breast cancer? Breast cancer is caused when the DNA in breast cells mutates or changes, disabling specific functions that control cell growth and division. In many cases, these mutated cells die or are attacked by the immune system some cells escape the immune system and grow unchecked, forming a tumor in the breast.

What are the risk factors for breast cancer? Risk factors are characteristics and conditions that increase your risk for a disease. Breast cancer risk factors include things that you cannot change, such as having a family history of breast cancer, being a woman and getting older, but there are other risk factors that you can change to help lower your likelihood of developing breast cancer. Doctors don’t know why some women with risk factors don’t get breast cancer and why others with no risk factors. You can make certain lifestyle choices to try to lower your risk. You can lower the risk of breast cancer progressing or coming back by; getting a healthy weight, being physically active, eating a healthy diet, dietary supplements, avoiding alcohol use. Staying healthy reduces the risk of getting breast cancer. To show your support towards breast cancer month volunteer in wearing pink and pink ribbons to show support for those who have been diagnosed with, are battling, or are recovering from the disease and help raise awareness towards breast cancer!

Fall Fest

By Ian Owdom

It’s that time of year again! On October 11 at 5:00 pm, Fresno High School hosted the yearly fall festival in Warrior Park. There were multiple fundraisers out such as Senora Tovar and the Latino Interact Club running a taco stand near the front gate entrance. To the right and across from the taco stand, there was another group of students from the Warrior Orchestra running a fundraiser. This was a sugar skull decorative station in which you could customize your very own sugar skull cookie (and then eat it) for $1. To the left of that there was another decorative station run by Alyssa Nicole and Darrell Austin. This was a simple arts and crafts station where you could put together your own Halloween decorations and items. At 6:00 pm, the Fresno High Orchestra performed a wonderful piece in Royce Hall. Folklorico followed with a coordinated, extravagant dance.
