Sportlight: Jio Ordonez

By Jeremiah Gomez- Sports Editor

Jiovanni Ordonez, a student at Fresno High and CART, is part of the Varsity Baseball team. The position he plays is mostly leftfield and shifts to centerfield as well. Jiovanni trains for games by focusing on practice, working out in his home gym, and always giving 100 percent of his effort. He believes his greatest ability on the field is his hitting and being a team player.

Jio’s main goal for the 2024 season is to win another championship. He wants to achieve a batting average above .400 and get 10 stolen bases this season.  Jio, like every player, has his own routine before and during the game. He always uses the restroom before the game and has a pregame meal. Jio and the team always have a team prayer before the game as well. During the game before every at bat, he swings at weighted bat four times and fist bumps his coach.

Athletes often have self-doubt at times, but Jio does his best to avoid self-doubt by telling himself he has done this before, and he knows his team always has his support as well. Jio says the best moment of his career was when his team won the NYL championship on a walk off homerun. He also considers just the opportunity to step on the field an amazing moment.

Day of Journalism Fieldtrip

by Elizabeth Hernandez

On March 1, the Journalism class visited Fresno City College to gain deeper insights into journalism, mass media, public relations, and related fields like broadcasting, reporting, and videography. The trip began at 8:30 and concluded at 12:30, where all students were warmly welcomed and provided with name tags and goodie bags upon arrival. Alongside students from Fresno High, attendees from four other high schools participated in the event, gathering in the auditorium for a welcome speech by Fresno City College President Robert Pimentel.

A unique activity organized by Fresno City College involved dividing students into groups numbered from #1-6, with each group focusing on different topics such as sports broadcasting, editorials, and the Rampage newspaper. Group #3, known as "The Power of Youth Media," highlighted journalism programs like the kNOw it all Youth Media initiative, which offers juniors and seniors the chance to join a journalism program and earn up to $300 based on their contributions. This program presents numerous opportunities for young students to voice their opinions and impact their communities positively.

This educational trip provided students with a comprehensive view of Journalism and helped them consider potential future paths in related fields or even sparked an interest in joining Journalism or newspaper programs.
