Fresno High Warrior Varsity Boys’ Soccer 8th Seed

by Xylia Manriquz

Boys’ Soccer has come to an end. All their 4:00-5:30 pm practices in the rain and mud and frigid cold took them to playoffs in Bakersfield. Their hard work placed them 8th seed. Sadly, the team lost, 1-0 in an over-time field goal kick.

Fresno High was good at making sure all athletes kept up with their grades. The team had managers who posted to social media accounts, creating lots of buzz around the players.

The boys agreed that they all worked hard and always helped each other out. #8 Julian Salinas said, “The team had good communication on and off the field, and everyone showed dedication.” His position was center midfield.

Another player, Jonathan Suarez offered, “Everyone had high awareness during the game. Everyone was quick up and going.”

For this group of Warriors, they weren’t just a team, there was a family connection.

“Consistency is key when playing basketball. The hard work these girls have put in over the summer showed this season but there is much more to be done, if you’re not growing, you’re dying,” said coach David.

The Lady Warriors were the 4 seed in the playoff bracket. On February 14, they hosted their first playoff game against the 13 seed San Luis Obispo. After a hard-fought game, they won with the final score of 29-26. “I feel like we knew we were going to win the entire game. They had no left hand, we were faster and well prepped,” said Destiny Edwards. “After the game, I felt glad that we won, but we still had more business to take care of,” continued to say Destiny Edwards.

On February 16, they hosted the 12 seed Ridgeview and again took a victory 52-38. They were now moving on to the semifinals to play the number 1 seed Bakersfield Christian at their home. After a long fought battle, the Lady Warriors fell short and took a loss 66-60 sending them home. “I felt very upset like I got shanked in the back and I feel like we prepared so much just to let it end like that,” said Zariah Skinner.

“I feel we were cheated I'm upset but we’ll get my get back,” added Destiny Edwards.

After an amazing season finishing with an overall record of 22-9 and making it to the semi-final in the D3 playoffs with only one year of rebuilding. Lady Warrior basketball is building its program back up.
