Sophomores Showcase Personal Projects
The MYP personal project is a student-centered and age-appropriate practical exploration in which students consolidate their learning throughout the program. This long-term project is designed as an independent learning experience of approximately 25 hours. Fresno High students got to share their work with staff and students on April 4, 2022. The event took place in Warrior Park.
Alec Reyes
By Conor Hustedde
Alec Reyes is a sophomore at Fresno High who recently showcased her personal project. Through her project, she explores the Seven Deadly Sins through the medium of art, with themes of nature, flowers, sin, and beauty presented through her canvases. She selected her project to challenge her creative and artistic abilities, and so she could educate people on the seven deadly sins while avoiding the stigma and distaste evoked by the topic. She found the creative process of generating ideas the easiest part of the project, though it was challenging to portray her imagination onto the canvasses exactly how she wanted. Through this project, she learned how to manage her time while creating a final product that she was satisfied with. For next year's sophomores, Alec advises, “Just not to procrastinate; if you wait until the end it will be a lot of long hours and long nights.”
Evan Baker
by Daisy Alvarado
Evan Baker is one of the many students who completed a personal project this school year. Evan made a table out of wood. Evan chose to make a table because he had the help of his grandpa, and it was something that he thought would be fun. His grandpa is the person who helped him most since he works in carpentry. Materials were provided by the school but essentially it was made at home by Evan and his grandfather. Evan says it was a fun and great learning experience overall.
Joslin Syra Vong
by Kayla Madrigal
Joslin Syra Vong is a current sophomore that created a beautiful art piece named Drowning. She didn’t know what she was going to do but she wanted to work with clay and create a sculpture that looked like it belonged in a museum. She admires art that has deep meanings, so she created one herself. The one thing that was hard for Joslin was creating the hand itself. “It kept flopping around the thoughts and box was simple.” Joslin learned that a lot of people can relate to her art. Also, that many teens have similar thoughts and would like their peers to be able to open. The best advice she could give future sophomores is to “use your time wisely and not to procrastinate.”
Isaac Toner
by Nick Bonilla
Isaac Torner is a sophomore at Fresno Highschool and what he had created for his personal project is a cosplay helmet in which it is a helmet from Star Wars. The reason he decided to make his project was because he was always a huge fan of Star Wars. He had a rough childhood and he watched Star Wars as an escape from the bad things that were happening. Making the helmet was a complicated process and it was very time consuming. He had spent a lot of time doing research such as looking for materials about the shape and size of the helmet. What Isaac learned throughout his process was that costume making is not as easy as it looks; it is a long and time-consuming process. Isaac’s advice to next year’s sophomores is do not waste time and focus on getting your schoolwork done.
