Time Out with Coach John Vinuela
by Cynthia Barajas-Ayala
Fresno High School’s own Mr. John Vinuela seamlessly bridges the worlds of competitive athletics and upperclassman academics, serving as both the head coach of the Water Polo team and an English teacher for juniors and seniors. His deep connection to sports began during his own high school days at Hoover High, where he competed in both water polo and wrestling. Recognizing the profound impact of athletics, he pursued a bachelor's degree in liberal studies and later earned a master’s degree in education from National University. Driven by a desire to give back to aquatic sports and take on a new adventure, Mr. Vinuela accepted a position at Fresno High, where he has dedicated the last 12 years to shaping the minds and athletic abilities of Warrior students.
Inside the classroom and out by the pool, Vinuela’s coaching and teaching philosophies are deeply intertwined. He views the athletic program at Fresno High as a unique and rewarding challenge, constantly striving to elevate the aquatics program while helping upperclassmen navigate their final years of high school literature. His passion for competition does not end with his own teams; he remains a dedicated fan of combat sports, soccer, and, naturally, water polo. By bringing his real-world athletic passion into his daily curriculum, he creates a dynamic environment where students are encouraged to work hard, stay disciplined, and push past their perceived limits.
At the core of Mr. Vinuela’s success as an educator and a mentor is a commitment to relationship development. He draws daily inspiration from his own past mentors, specifically his former coach, Mr. Teri Griffon, and his military leader, Commander Esample, both of whom taught him the value of strong leadership and trust. Instead of relying on rigid rules, Vinuela motivates his students and athletes by building genuine, meaningful connections with them. By fostering an environment rooted in mutual respect, Coach Vinuela ensures that his Warriors are equipped with the confidence and resilience they need to succeed both in the pool and far beyond graduation.
