Dear Wise Old Owl,
I am having trouble staying on top of things like schoolwork, attendance, and my job. I seem to find myself always slacking off on one thing. I am always trying to focus on one thing to catch up, but I can’t always focus on the singular thing without any of the other things starting to fail, and I seem to struggle and have to panic at every last moment and rush to get it done. The problem with that is that it always comes out terrible; I know I could have done better if I were able to stay on top of things. When I am having trouble with these things, I don’t look for help because I like to do things on my own. The tough thing is that I can’t seem to get it under control even when I try my hardest. What am I supposed to do? Please help me, Wise Old Owl.
Sincerely,
Overwhelmed
Dear Overwhelmed,
I would remind you that you do not have to do everything at once or perfectly. When you have a lot on your plate, it can be easy to get overwhelmed or wait until the last minute to do the work. Instead of trying to do everything at once, try to make a list of what needs to be done first. Break up the big tasks into smaller steps so you can give yourself a break occasionally.
You should always remember to ask for help. Asking for help does not mean you are weak or unable to do something on your own. If you are struggling with school, ask a teacher or someone you trust. For your job, keep track of your schedule so you know what needs to be done. You could also use a planner or set reminders on your phone so you can keep track. This way, staying organized can help you feel less overwhelmed.
Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Falling behind or making mistakes doesn’t mean you are failing; it just means you can improve. Try to focus on progress, not perfection. You can learn how to balance your responsibilities. Also, no matter how hard life may be, never give up; always try your hardest.
Sincerely,
WOO
