History 101: History of the Pig Game
by Brianna Fuentes-Palma
Started in 1930, the Little Big Game, also known as the Pig Game, has been a football rivalry between the two oldest high schools in Fresno, the Fresno High Warriors and the Roosevelt High Rough Riders. The Pig Game was inspired by the Big Game rivalry between Stanford University and UC Berkeley. In 1946, a trophy was introduced. "Pancho" is a bronze pig trophy that is granted to the winner of the Pig Game and kept on their campus.
Roosevelt High School currently holds a 7-win streak against Fresno High School. They have also recently passed Fresno High in Pig Game victories. This recent upsurge in wins for the Rough Riders has shocked many and left students wondering if the Warriors can ever make a comeback. This year's game on October 30th, has had plenty of anticipation leading up to it and plenty of guesses on who this year's victor will be.
The Little Big Pig Game has remained a tradition ever since it began. The game brings students, parents, alumni, and staff together. It is something that everyone can look forward to and something that brings the community together. It is a fun, competitive tradition that will continue for generations and continue to be something that creates lifetime memories.
