Fresno High’s Girls’ Soccer
By Bella Garcia
Fresno High takes great pride in its Girls’ Soccer Team. For the past few years, the Girls’ Varsity Team has done well at Fresno High, climbing their way to the top of their division. Last year, the Warriors made it to the 1st playoff game. For the past two years, the teams have been coached by Coach Leida and Coach Dan. Practices are every day from 3:30-5:30. Games take place one to two times a week. Most of the equipment such as cones, balls, goal posts, and uniforms are provided to team members. It is expected of the team members to provide themselves with their own cleats, practice socks, and shin guards. Girls who are interested in joining soccer must try-out. Based on their initial skills and performance, the coaches will place the girls in either junior varsity (JV) or Varsity. The seasons began with basic condition and practices back in October and is scheduled to end in early February.
Soccer is a game involving two teams of 11 players who try to maneuver the ball into the other team's goal without using their hands or arms. Soccer positions consist of the goalkeeper, left/right fullback (or wingback), center back (or sweeper), defensive midfielder, right/center/left midfielder (or winger), and attacking midfielder (or center forward/striker).
Senior, and varsity team member, Patricia Flores explained that to be a part of the team, players must be prepared for a lot of physical work, conditioning, and perfecting techniques. At almost every practice, teammates work on their skills with ball drills and a lot of running. Patty is the varsity team’s right fullback, rightwing, and midfielder. She enjoys the constant movement and aggressiveness. Patty described the team as “close for the start of the season,” but it will take time for the girls to become more accustomed and comfortable with each other to form the Fresno High girls’ soccer family.
The Sacrifices of Basketball

The FHS Girls’ Basketball team has become a family, but family comes with sacrifice. “FIERCE” is the new motto Coach David Sambrano created for the team. “Each letter holds its own meaning to the rebuilding of the program.” The Owlet took on the project of finding out what sacrifices the girls have had to make to achieve the goal they are working for, and the goal this year is to win the league.
These 11 girls are all student athletes, some taking IB (International Baccalaureate) classes and others keeping their GPA at a 3.0 or higher. “I’ve had to give up going out with friends and family, sleep from having to stay up late doing homework and even just relaxing time for basketball but it all worth in the end,” said Remni White one of the captains on the team. “I have sacrificed my time away from upcoming business and making money, sleep, family and friends time, school events, and homework time,” Aaliyah Hernandez agreed. Destiny Edwards added, “Sleep is a big one for all of us. It something we need but don’t get a lot of you have to really know how to manage your time while being a student athlete, I’ve lost so much me time too I don’t read as much as I used to.” “Sleep, I missed a lot of my brother's games, and homework time,” Zariah Skinner chimed in.
“When you are on a basketball team you feel as if you are a part of another family. The trust, the laughs, the tears, and the arguments are all worth it I the end when the goal you have all been working so hard to get is finally achieved,” said Makayla Taylor.
